The Age of Anguish reflects upon three girls residing in the countryside during the time of their adolescence. Limited by their surroundings, the girls are confined to a simple life as their personalities become increasingly complex through their coming to maturity. Confusion, insecurity, and imagination are persistent and turbulent forces within the mind of a young girl as she blossoms into a woman. These photographs represent the waning moments of our youth as we gradually discover and reconcile our place in the world. The Age of Anguish series was shot over two years in the heart of southwestern Ontario. The project started out as a typical portrait session, but after only a couple of frames I began to see how much the girls needed to express themselves through my lens. The Age of Anguish became a reflection of my youth and a responsibility to empower the girls at such a crucial stage of development.
